Suburbs

Fair Haven was one of the earliest “Suburbs” of New Haven. It was just over the Mill River and began as a part of the City, was then it’s own town for a few years and again part of New Haven in the late 1800’s.

West Haven, being on the rail line and so close to New Haven, was one of the first places that Irish families from New Haven moved to. We also have photos of Savin Rock Park on our Leisure page, as it was located in West Haven.

These are images of  Fair Haven and Wallingford, CT during the late 1880’s to early 1900’s. Many Irish families moved to Wallingford from New Haven. Many worked in the Silver companies. Many opened shops and pubs.
